Cat-proofing

Cat safe hanging plants

Hanging a toxic plant higher is not the same as making it safe. Leaves drop, cats climb, and trailing vines can still be reached.

Hanging plants to start with

Use these as lower-risk starting points, then confirm the exact plant name.

Reported non-toxic

Orchid

Phalaenopsis species

Phalaenopsis orchids are commonly listed as non-toxic for cats and dogs. Use the scientific name when checking a specific orchid.

Trailing plants that need caution

Pothos and some philodendron-like plants are popular hanging choices but are not cat-safe. If a cat can reach the vine or fallen leaves, use a safer alternative.

Hanging still leaves risk

Watch for dropped leaves, spilled soil, fertilizer granules, and vase or cachepot water. A lower-risk plant can still cause stomach upset if a cat eats enough of it.
