This site uses cautious, source-led plant safety labels. It does not diagnose exposures, recommend home treatment, or replace veterinary advice.
Primary plant toxicity sources
Pet Safe Plant Finder starts with public veterinary, poison-control, or institutional references. Source coverage is not treated as complete.
Label policy
How are plant safety labels assigned?
Reported non-toxic means a checked source lists the named plant as non-toxic for the named animal. Toxic or high-risk toxic means checked sources identify the plant as a concern. Caution or unknown is used when the common name is broad, the exact plant is unclear, or the checked sources do not support a confident answer.
No guessing
Why does the checker return unknown instead of guessing?
Plant common names are reused. Names such as lily, palm, fern, daisy, and pothos can create pet-safety mistakes when the scientific name is missing. Unknown is safer than inferring that an unidentified plant is safe.
Conservative handling
How do we handle conflicting toxicity data?
When source notes differ or a common name could point to more than one plant, the site uses the more cautious label until the exact plant can be verified. It cites the source record used for the displayed status instead of averaging conflicting claims.
Source limits
Why are some pages cautious even when a plant is popular?
Popularity does not make a plant pet-safe. If a plant is unlabeled, sold under a broad common name, or missing from the current database, the checker avoids guessing and points users back to identification and professional help.
Review workflow
When is a page updated?
Pages are updated when a source-backed plant record changes, a common-name confusion needs clearer handling, or an indexed answer no longer explains the practical risk clearly. The priority checker and lily/hosta pages were materially reviewed on 2026-08-15.
Corrections
How can a source issue be corrected?
Send the page URL, plant common name, scientific name, and the source URL through the contact page. Corrections are reviewed conservatively and should not be used for urgent exposure decisions.
What this site intentionally does not do
- It does not provide veterinary diagnosis, treatment instructions, home remedies, or dosage advice.
- It does not mark a missing plant safe because a search has no result.
- It does not treat common-name matches as enough when a scientific name is needed.
- It does not claim that a non-toxic listing means a plant is edible or risk-free.
