How to read plant toxicity sources

Plant safety pages are only useful when the plant name, animal, and source are clear.

Start with the scientific name

A common name can refer to several plants. Scientific names reduce confusion and help you compare references without mixing unrelated species.

Read non-toxic as lower risk, not edible

Non-toxic listings do not mean a plant is a snack. Soil, fertilizer, pesticides, sharp leaves, thorns, and large amounts of plant material can still cause problems.

When sources are incomplete

This site uses caution or unknown labels when the exact plant is unclear, when the common name is broad, or when the first-wave sources do not support a confident answer.
